Weekly Market Update - 6 July 2015

Market Outlook

Equity Market Outlook

  • Increase market volatility is expected this week after Greece voted against austerity measures and with the on-going scandal in 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) continuing to weight-on the domestic market. Regional market also suffered from last week’s sell-off in Shanghai and the fear of Greece exiting the Eurozone.
  • Expect market to focus on headline-news flow rather than fundamentals for the week.
  • To remain sidelined for now until bearish sentiment subsides.
  • But look to add on selected fundamental stocks that are sold off indiscriminately.

Fixed Income Outlook

  • Last week, the Malaysian Government Securities (MGS) market rallied along the belly of the curve by 7-10 bps on the positive announcement by Fitch, which upgraded the sovereign outlook to stable. Investors were seen taking profit after the rally. Towards the latter part of the week, market sentiment turned, brought on by the uncertainty of the Greek referendum and the headline news on 1MDB funds. Due to the headline risks, the front of the curve which are dominated by foreign investors, could see some weakness in the near term.
